Why doesn’t the Backpack Bed display the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander flags?

Backpack Bed for Homeless recognises that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are significantly overrepresented in Australia’s homeless population. We are deeply aware of this and treat the issue with respect and sensitivity.

Dignity is central to the design of the Backpack Bed. The product was intentionally created with very limited branding so it resembles a regular backpack. This helps protect the privacy and dignity of the person using it.

All Backpack Beds carry a small Australian flag, as the product was designed in Australia and is now used internationally (currently in eight countries). A separately registered charity also operates in the United States.

In the past, we met with community Elders to discuss the possible use of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags. However, as no formal endorsement or outcome was provided, we chose not to proceed. We believe it is important to have appropriate cultural approval before using these flags.

We remain respectful of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and their cultural symbols.
